The Morandi Bridge’s first beam to be lowered is the beam between piles 7 and 8. A strand-jack system supports the beam’s total 900tons weight and lowers it from an altitude of 48 meters at the speed of approx. 7m/hour.
pile number 5 is the first to be demolished, with two maxi-cranes. The bridge deck was cut lengthwise into three parts that were lowered separately.
The eastern part of the bridge, in particular piles 10 and 11 are demolished by means of a controlled explosion that used around 500kg of dynamite and a circuit of hydrants to contain dust.
The first two of the total eighteen piles of the new bridge are built with reinforced concrete. They are 45 meters tall each, with an elliptical shape section. They are built with concrete and special additives that allow a shorter drying period, by means of wooden climbing formworks.
The first beam of the new bridge is positioned between the piles 5 and 6, thanks to two cranes. The steel beam is 50m in length and weighs 480 tons. It’s lifted up to 45 meters.
The second 100m beam is relocated above the riverbed.
The third and last 100m beam is positioned between piles 10 and 11, above the railway track that passes through the Polcevera viaduct. A strand-jack system raises the almost 2000 tons of steel from the ground.
