RINA has been awarded the contract for the study on ‘Research needs on the use of Earth observation data for the benefit of renewable energy exploitation and deployment’ issued by DG RTD.
The present study falls within the long-standing activities of cooperation between ESA and the EC. In the area of Earth Observation (EO) research and innovation, DG Research and Innovation (RTD) and the ESA Earth Observation Programme (EOP) have been actively developing collaboration over the last few years, capitalising on the complementarity of their respective activities, to deliver cutting edge innovation and science in Europe. Activities within the Copernicus framework are comprised inside this collaboration.
Copernicus is a European Union Programme aimed at developing European information services based on satellite Earth Observation and in situ (non-space) data.
The study started the 1st of May, will last 10 months and has the objective to provide the EC with an in-depth analysis of how EO data are currently used in six renewable energy sectors (on- and offshore wind, solar energy, ocean energy (wave and tide), hydropower, bioenergy and geothermal energy), an identification of possible research and development paths and an analysis of the benefit achievable introducing such R&D outcomes associated to EO in the sectors.
EO data and services are expected to play an important role towards energy resource assessments, production plant siting, operations (including safety) and various decision-making processes.
The main outcome of the service contract resulting from this study will be the production of three reports that will serve as background documents for research policy development and applications of Earth Observation in the field of renewable energy.
After a thorough review of the most relevant literature and interviews, the project team has come to a preliminary assessment and the first external review on the document drafted will be done through an online survey. Filling-in the survey will help us to involve the community in providing its point of view in the subject of the study and to give preliminary input to the following consensus process. The project team will go through all feedbacks and comments received, with the aim to discussing and validating the inputs received during two full-day workshops to be held in Brussels.
First validation workshop is organised by September 19th at EY premises (Diegem, close to Brussels Intl. airport) and a final workshop will be held in EC premises in December (one day workshop, possible dates: 11th, 12th and 13th December). Travel and accommodation costs will be reimbursed up to 400€.
