Challenge
Cities consume over 75% of natural resources, produce over 50% of global waste and emit between 60-80% of greenhouse gases.
Moreover, urban population in the European Union is exposed to air pollutants above EU limits.
RESPONSE has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 957751 to solve the so called “energy trilemma” at building, block and district levels in smart cities:
- Security: increase EU energy security through Renewable Energy Sources, Storage and Smart Grid solutions
- Equity: make energy access fair and affordable for all
- Environmental sustainability: facilitate EU cities to deliver positive energy blocks and districts and make them resilient and ready to adapt to climate change
Moreover, RESPONSE open and collaborative ecosystem will allow the deployment of citizen-centric design and cocreation initiatives for energy sustainability in:
- Dijon in France
- Turku in Finland
- Brussels in Belgium
- Zaragoza in Spain
- Botosani in Romania
- Ptolemaida in Greece
- Gabrovo in Bulgaria
- Severodonetsk in Ukraine
Approach
In the framework of RESPONSE, RINA is mainly in charge of Business Models for Smart City Solutions and Governance Capacity.
Therefore, we are going to assist smart cities and its stakeholders to capture value, by generating novel and sustainable business solutions and suitable Business Models to support and stimulate the market deployment of the smart city solutions, with a special focus on governance aspects in view of accelerating the smart economy of the cities involved, while recognizing and eliminating barriers and/or risks.
Moreover, we are going to identify potential non-energy services to generate new revenue streams.
We are also responsible for the replication activities and the financial and economic impact assessment.
Last but not least, we are going to develop the roadmap on standardization, certification and regulatory activities.
Conclusion
In conclusion, RESPONSE Project Consortium will inject locally produced renewable energy in the energy mix, while optimising the operations of the energy systems by integrating storage technologies and smart grid solutions along with advanced monitoring, control and automation.
The project solutions will be adapted to meet building and district -specific needs, which will stimulate:
- the renovation of existing buildings and the creation of new ones more cost-effective and environmentally friendly;
- the delivery of a local energy system that is more secure, more stable and cheaper for the citizens and public authorities that contributes to improvement of air quality by reduction of transport-based CO2 emissions, sustainable electricity and heating production at district level; and
- the demonstration of a set of novel business models, designed in line with the circular economy principles
