Climate change poses unprecedented risks to our communities. To effectively build resilience to extreme events, it is essential to simultaneously address social inequalities and implement innovative solutions that span multiple sectors.
The Regions4Climate project aims to foster a collaborative approach towards a socially-just transition to climate resilience. By working closely with regional stakeholders, the project seeks to develop and implement cross-sectoral roadmaps that integrate sociocultural, technological, digital, business, governance, and environmental solutions.
One of the main objectives is to propose innovative solutions, with nature-based (NBS) systems to mitigate coastal erosion risk in the Tuscany Region (Italy).
Therefore, Regions4Climate is a direct response to the EU Mission Adaptation to Climate Change, which underscores the pressing need to safeguard livelihoods, well-being, and the environment in the face of climate change threats.
RINA will carry out year-long meteomarine monitoring by installing a buoy to detect wave and current parameters. This monitoring will be used for numerical modeling of wave motion at each point in the Gulf of Sterpaia. These data are essential for dune design purposes and determining the main geometric characteristics, such as dune height.
Additionally, we will make a significant contribution to dune design by incorporating Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) techniques, bringing expertise and innovation to this area. We will also conduct geomechanical monitoring through the installation of fiber optic instruments. Moreover, environmental monitoring will be conducted by installing a control unit that will track temperature, humidity, and UV radiation. The geotechnical and environmental data will be used to analyze the resilience of the project over time, and all analyses will be consolidated within a dashboard.
Overall, the plan outlines a comprehensive approach to address coastal erosion risk in the Tuscany Region, combining cutting-edge monitoring technology with Nature-Based Solutions and advanced data analysis.
Through this project, we can provide added value for the analysis of coastal erosion risk mitigation. The proposed NBS techniques offer sustainable and innovative solutions for the community. Furthermore, the resilience analysis conducted in this study can be applied to other case studies, playing a critical role in understanding the long-term evolution of the project.
