Nowadays there is an increasing demand of sea transport and the usual way for ports to deal with it and compete against competitors is to expand the port in the original site. Unfortunately, there is scarcity of land available for port expansion in densely populated urban areas where most of European ports are situated.
In fact, many container terminals are coping with congestion and capacity problems and port managers are searching for more efficient and cost-effective means and innovative technical solutions in the handling of containers.
Container handling equipment automation is an innovative technological solution that contributes not only to improve the utilization rate of equipment and reduce operating costs, but also to greatly improve efficiency of terminals.
LOGIMATIC has received funding from the European GNSS Agency under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 687534. The project aims to develop an accurate localization and navigation system based on the tight integration of EGNSS and on-board sensors to automate Straddle Carrier operations in an enhanced container chain management in port yards, thus increasing the efficiency of this type of operations, speeding up the tasks, enabling resource, time and space optimization, preserving security requirements.
This system is integrated on the Straddle Carrier as part of an On-board Navigation Unit (ONU) connected to the centralized system for monitoring purposes and to exchange action plans and progress reports of their daily tasks.
In the framework of Logimatic, RINA is responsible for the development of reliable measures to guarantee the security of the solutions developed. The protection and security of facilities, equipment and resources involves the cooperation of multiple technologies designed for specific purposes: monitoring, perception, signalling, support to management and storage. Since these premises, the design of security measures for critical resources requires an engineering process to properly design, support the implementation and plan the maintenance of the system and its infrastructures.
We cover two aspects for ensuring the whole LOGIMATIC system security.
The first aspect is the design of solutions to provide information about GNSS signal integrity against intentional attacks but covering not only spoofing but also jamming. This security aspect is crucial in applications where the integrity of the positional information is of paramount importance. Specifically within the LOGIMATIC project the automated operation of the straddle carriers imply the use of the GNSS signal, therefore a real system based on the LOGIMATIC developments must cope with possible GNSS attacks responding to the specific port authorities needs regarding the security of the overall system.
The second aspect is related to the cybersecurity of the whole system. Here security threads are analysed in communication, robustness and availability of information and system itself, in order to ensure confidentiality, integrity and availability of the solution in operational conditions and in daily tasks/activities in ports and in logistics operations.
The outcomes we expect are the identification of proper measures to enforce in place the IT security of LOGIMATIC system, taking into account the pertaining guidelines from ISO 27000 family, which suggest to identify the context, to perform an IT risk analysis on it, to apply commensurate controls to treat the risks, entirely managed by the organization’s IT governance, through policies, procedures and dedicated resources.
In conclusion, LOGIMATIC project will allow an enhanced container chain management in port yards, thus:
Such benefits are ensured to the development of on various modular exploitable solutions consisting in:
