The evolution of science and technology in composite materials is becoming increasingly important for improving efficiency and sustainability in various industrial sectors. Composites, known for their lightweight properties, durability, and energy efficiency, play a pivotal role in reducing resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in diverse industries. Additionally, their resource-efficient manufacturing processes help minimize waste and energy usage.
The FURHY project (GA 101091828) is dedicated to developing an innovative, bio-based, intelligent, and entirely recyclable composite material through a fast and low-energy out-of-autoclave process. This material will feature a matrix composed of a novel bio-based epoxy resin formulation filled with expanded graphite, enhancing both the material and manufacturing process with smart functions. The goal is to create a hybrid composite by combining hemp and recycled carbon fibers, thus maximizing environmental benefits from a life-cycle perspective.
The aerospace and automotive industries are the primary sectors where these advancements are going to be tested, as they promise to deliver more sustainable, high-performance materials for these critical fields.
The FURHY project has been strategically structured to introduce innovative solutions throughout every stage of the product chain. These innovations encompass the development of raw materials, the final manufacturing of components, and the recycling of scraps and end-of-life products.
RINA will assume a leadership role in developing the business plan, leveraging its expertise in innovation management services for research and commercial projects, as well as its proficiency in intellectual property rights issues.
Furthermore, RINA will take a central role in overseeing the Life Cycle Assessment and ensuring that the FURHY recycling route aligns with a circular economy approach. This commitment underscores RINA's dedication to promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility within the project.
The FURHY project represents a significant step towards sustainable innovation in composite materials in strategic industrial sectors. With its focus on bio-based, recyclable composites and a holistic approach, it holds great promise for revolutionizing the aerospace and automotive industries while contributing to a more environmentally responsible future.
