Challenge

Current transport systems do not sufficiently take into account physical and social characteristics of women in the design of products and services, and in fostering women’s employability in the industry.

Moreover, from the transport-related jobs perspective, only 22 % of women work in the transport sector.

Inclusive transportation for womenDIAMOND has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 824326 in order to remodel transport systems to become more inclusive, safe and secure for women, from both the employment and service perspective.

In particular, the project’s main goal is to turn data into actionable knowledge with notions of fairness, in order to progress towards an inclusive and efficient transport system through the development of a methodology based on the collection and analysis of disaggregated data, including new sources, analytics and management techniques.

To proof actionability, this project will make concrete advances in four real-world scenarios (use-cases) where inclusiveness is currently a central issue:

  • Railways and public multimodal transport,
  • Vehicle Dynamics control towards autonomous driving,
  • Vehicle sharing
  • Corporate social responsibility and employment

Approach

In the framework of DIAMOND, RINA supports the Project Consortium mainly in relation to the following activities:

  • Inclusive transport for womenData Collection: to collect the data it is necessary to perform the multidisciplinary analysis for each use-case and characterize the current open issues in transport systems;
  • DIAMOND testing and validation: we are performing several activities to test and evaluate the DIAMOND tools and their capacity to achieve a fair inclusion.

Socio-economic impact assessment (impact of new solutions): we are an assessment of the socio-economic impact of our approach, concretely of the identified measures to adjust transport functionalities and methods towards an inclusive transport system.

Conclusion

In conclusion, DIAMOND will create new sources of information (structured datasets) that once analysed will generate new knowledge on women’s transport needs and expectations (“women in transport system model”). This knowledge will then get transformed into a new level of understanding (through “actionable tools) that can be easily used in planning future transport systems.

Moreover, the project will contribute to an inclusive mobility system, with higher level of social equity.
