The project objective is to demonstrate technical feasible alternatives for garbage prevention, recovery and recycling on a cruise ship focusing on the detection, testing, evaluation and dissemination of best available techniques and approaches for three on-board garbage streams: (i) packaging, (ii) biodegradable waste and (iii) paper; and three horizontal issues: (i) energy efficiency, (ii) ashore garbage disposal and (iii) normative consistency and precertification.
Moreover it aims at drafting first suggestions for a normative progress concerning waste management on-board and applying, for the first time, the Kyoto requirements at the marine sector.
Support to check the normative coherence of the innovative solutions envisaged and draft a possible standard voluntary scheme for the garbage on board process management.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s LIFE+ programme under Grant Agreement No LIFE 10 ENV/IT/367.
Development and testing of technologies and approaches on a pilot case-study for the recovering of the economic value of biodegradable waste and a raising of the waste hierarchy of garbage (as defined in the EU Dir. 2008/98/EC).
The purpose of the study is to extend the identified successful technologies and approaches to the full Costa fleet, to the Carnival fleets and to the marine sector in general.
