Challenge

40 to 45% of Europe’s energy consumption comes from buildings and only 1 to 2% of the building stock is replaced annually in the EU, hence most of the energy savings should come from existing buildings. However, today’s measured rate of refurbishment (1.2%) is still very low.

STUNNING is a research project funded from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement N. 768287 that aims at identifying and promoting innovative packages for renovation of buildings in order to accelerate their acceptance by the market players and consumers and increase the renovation rate in Europe.

STUNNING will therefore develop a so called “Renovation Hub”“ for Building Renovation to share and promote successful business models for the large scale deployment and replication of innovative and adaptable refurbishment packages.

STUNNING also supports the involvement of the very different stakeholders, which benefits from and contributes to the “Renovation Hub”.

Approach

In the framework of STUNNING, RINA is in charge of the promotion of new business models and validation through business cases.

One of the main objective of this activity is to promote across Europe the implementation of innovative and original "refurbishment packages" including business models for key stakeholders.

Validation of the process will be done through real business cases that will be selected covering different built environment.

Conclusion

In conclusion, STUNNING will have the following impacts for the EU community:

  • Cost-effectiveness of the renovation compared to current costs
  • Development of adaptive renovation packages with high energy efficiency and low environmental impact
  • Increased awareness of and commitment to improved energy-efficiency of the building stock
  • Increased capacity of municipalities to effect the renovation of building stocks, in particular through the use of public procurement tools
  • Better quality standards and performance guarantees while improving indoor environment and remaining cost-effective
  • More involvement of customers/users in the integrated–innovative business model solutions
