The main objective of the LeanShips project is to demonstrate solutions that support the making of new and existing (retrofitted) ships more efficient and less polluting, in accordance with end users’ requirements.
The technologies selected within LeanShips address engines/fuels/drive trains, hull/propulsors and energy systems/emission abatement technologies.
Assessment of safety and regulatory aspects related to the ship integration of the Decision Support System for the ship Energy management developed within the project and assessment of the safety and regulatory aspects related the emission after treatment (particle filter), developed within the project, for the emission reductions of leisure/passenger ships.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s H2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 636146.
LeanShips will carry out eight demonstrator show cases (Demo Cases) that combine technologies for efficient and less polluting vessels with end-users’ needs and requirements.
In particular, demonstrators concern: green ship-handling tugs by using a new generation of high-speed LNG-fuelled engines in direct-drive configuration, demonstration of the potential of methanol as an alternative fuel, an efficient LNG-carrier, SECA retrofitting strategy, implementation and demonstration of a large area oscillating propulsor (O-foil) and diesel-electric propulsion in inland shipping, large diameter propeller for general cargo vessel, Decision Support System for ship energy efficiency and finally energy efficient systems for leisure/passenger ship.
