“Green Steel for Europe” supports the EU towards achieving the 2030 climate and energy targets and the 2050 long-term strategy for a climate neutral Europe, with effective solutions for clean steelmaking. Totalling 10 partners (including a think tank, research and technology organisations, a European industrial association and a European technology platform), the project consortium relies on the best mix of skills and expertise and allows for full coverage of the EU Member States and steelmaking installations.
“Green Steel for Europe” will achieve its objectives thanks to the combined efforts of the consortium partners in four areas: (i) developing a technology roadmap and defining mid- and long-term pathways for the decarbonisation of the EU steel industry; (ii) identifying public and private funding opportunities and proposing blending and sequencing options to maximise their impacts; (iii) assessing the economic, social, environmental and industrial leadership impacts of EU-level policy options; and (iv) ensuring the dissemination of the project results and engagement of relevant EU stakeholders.
Through its innovative approach consisting of the combined assessment of promising technologies, industrial transformation scenarios, and policy options and impacts, “Green Steel for Europe” will effectively contribute to the sustainable decarbonisation of the steel industry. Ultimately, the project will help position the EU as a leading provider of low-carbon products, services and advanced technologies in steelmaking, and support the green transition and fight against climate change on a global scale.
RINA leads WP2, which aims to provide an overall picture of the existing funding sources for the decarbonisation of the EU steel industry as well as of the potential ways to maximise their benefits.
This WP will identify and analyse both public and private funding sources, and assess their benefits both individually and in different combinations (financial aid merging and/or sequencing) in correlation with the identified technology steps.
“Green Steel for Europe” enhances the evidence base, equipping stakeholders (both industry and policymakers) with state-of-the-art knowledge on: Breakthrough technologies to decarbonise the steel industry. o Technical, financial and non-financial problems and barriers impinging on the decarbonisation of the steel industry, energy-intensive industries and beyond; o Investment needs and funding opportunities to support the decarbonisation process. - “Green Steel for Europe” devises clear decarbonisation pathways for the EU steel industry. - “Green Steel for Europe” proposes mechanisms for blending and sequencing existing and forthcoming funding opportunities to maximise their impacts. - “Green Steel for Europe” provides policy recommendations, backed by a comprehensive assessment of the economic, social, environmental and industrial leadership impacts of different policy options; - “Green Steel for Europe” engages all relevant stakeholders. - “Green Steel for Europe” ultimately provides solutions for the decarbonisation of the EU steel industry, ultimately supporting the achievement of the EU climate targets.
