The objective of the GREENCRANES is to provide port container terminals (PCTs) with the necessary tools to improve the energy efficiency of their equipment and operations whilst reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission levels.
RINA supported the Italian Ministry in the action coordination and in particular was leader in the energy assessment and management for PCT.
GREENCRANES demonstrated that old generation rubber tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) can also be converted into highly efficient cranes in terms of energy consumption by simply fitting them with low-power generators. This alone generated energy savings of around 45% and significant reductions in GHG emissions with minimal loss in operational performance.
The project also introduced an intelligent energy management system based on the integration of the energy efficiency of all operational and business areas of a PCT by implementing a series of energy key performance indicators (KPIs).
The action, a market-driven innovative initative centred on PCTs, has obtained relevant results that demonstrate that the evolution of European ports towards a low-carbon emission model is feasible from a financial, technical and environmental perspective whilst providing benefits for industry, companies and society as a whole.
