Challenge

GAINN4CORE contributes to the GAINN-IT Global Project as it aims at defining, prototyping and testing two of the three Italian LNG grids (the Thyrrenic-Ligurian and the Adriatic-Ionic) including the following Core ports:

  • Genoa, La Spezia and Livorno (Thyrrenian-Ligurian grid)
  • Ravenna and Venice (Adriatic-Ionic grid).

Approach

RINA is leader of “Activity 1: Italian network of alternative fuels infrastructures”.
The aims of Activity 1 are to:

  • define the 3 pilot LNG grids and the specification of their components;
  • define the criteria, requirements and governance model to be fulfilled for future integration of the 3 pilot LNG grids into the GAINN-IT network of infrastructure for alternative fuels
  • ensure consistency between the different “components” in order for them to integrate swiftly.

Conclusion

The GAINN-IT global project mainly addresses LNG as an alternative fuel for both maritime and road transport. In terms of LNG, each port which is an “element” of the GAINN-IT Network will include, in 2030 at the latest, the following four components:

  • LNG receiving system and related ancillaries;
  • LNG storage and local distribution system and related ancillaries;
  • LNG ship refueling system and related ancillaries;
  • LNG vehicles (non-ships) bunkering system and related ancillaries.
