In Europe and Worldwide, natural or man-made hazards are strongly impacting citizen’s safety and generate increasing economic loses year by year. The transport system is particularly sensitive to them, since it represents an extremely fragile asset, whose functions and services have to be ensured continually and safely, in face of unanticipated events.
This requires the adoption of various measures including investments that Infrastructure Managers will have to face in the future, in order to maintain these functionalities and definitely to improve the resilience of the network. In this context, in 2018, the FORESEE project has been funded from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 769373.
The overall objective of the project is to provide cost effective and reliable tools to improve resilience of transport infrastructure, as the ability to reduce the magnitude and/or duration of disruptive events.
Through new innovative technologies, methodologies and resilient schemes, FORESEE will help Infrastructure Managers to disruptive hazards impacting on the transportation network, namely:
In the framework of FORESEE, Among various engineering activities, RINA is in charge of the development of the Response, Mitigation and Adaptation Toolkit.
Issues such as compatible standards and interfaces, security measures to be implemented, compatibility and transferability of information from/to legacy systems and external database, access, etc. will be part of the process for the definition of the architecture of the FORESEE Toolkit. Moreover, RINA will deal with the customization of the Toolkit to the pilots and demonstration cases.
Finally, RINA will define, develop and deliver a learning package consisting on training materials and interactive description of a set of usage scenarios and potential application cases.
In conclusion, FORESEE innovations will impact on an increase of the level of service for transport infrastructure, with the aim of improving the resilience of the transport network across the various phases of the life-cycle. FORESEE targets the following impacts:
