FISSAC

Fostering industrial symbiosis for a sustainable resource intensive industry across the construction value chain

Time Project Coordinator Funding Scheme
Start date: September 2015
End date: February  2020
Acciona Infraestructuras S.A.  Horizon 2020
Call: H2020-WASTE-2014

Challenge

The overall objective of FISSAC project is to develop and demonstrate a new paradigm built on an innovative industrial symbiosis (IS) model towards a zero waste approach in the resource intensive industries of the construction value chain, tackling harmonized technological and non technological requirements, leading to material closed-loop processes and moving to a circular economy.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s H2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 642154.

Approach

  • Support in the definition and set-up of innovative technological processes for obtaining cost-effective secondary raw materials from steel slags waste to be used in the design and manufacturing of eco-innovative construction products (i.e. new eco-cement and concrete).
  • Support to implementation and evaluation of technology verification schemes, also from gender perspective, including EU Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Pilot Programme.
  • Support to the development of the FISSAC IS software platform, to identify and facilitate the establishment of industrial symbiosis opportunities.
  • Facilitate the replication of FISSAC model and the co-development of transition process from linear to circular economy with relevant stakeholders through Living Lab concept in Italy..

Conclusion

A methodology and a software platform will be developed in order to implement the innovative industrial symbiosis model in a feasible scenario of industrial symbiosis synergies between industries (steel, aluminum, natural stone, chemical and demolition and construction sectors) and stakeholders in the extended construction value chain. It will guide how to overcome technical barriers and non technical barriers, as well as standardisation concerns to implement and replicate industrial symbiosis in a local/regional dimension.

The ambition of the model will be to be replicated in other regions and other value chains symbiosis scenarios. The model will be applied based on the three sustainability pillars.
