Challenge

Over decades, global warming has become a critical issue for the welfare of our planet. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), transportation is an important cause of the global CO2 emissions, accounted for 22% of the world CO2 emission in 2010. 

In particular, within transportation, heavy-duty (HD) vehicles contribute about 80% of the total CO2 emissions of commercial vehicles. 

Therefore, transportation affects greatly the urban air quality and has an impact on the external costs for public health.

ASSURED has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 769850 in order to boost the electrification of urban commercial vehicles and their integration with high power fast charging infrastructure, evaluating several infrastructures in different cities across Europe.

To achieve this, ASSURED Project Consortium will verify its solutions in real live operation with passengers in Barcelona, Osnabruck and Goteborg; moreover, electric trucks and light delivery vehicles will be tested.

Approach

In the framework of ASSURED, RINA is in charge of the exploitation of the project and of the development of Business Models, with the aim of:

• defining the Bus Service Functions,
• defining the exploitation plan and the IPR management strategy in order to ensure project results are properly used and distributed,
• analysing and evaluating the different impacts generated by the introduction of the project solutions, from the economic (Financial Viability), social and environmental point of view. 

Moreover, we are responsible for the evaluation of ASSURED outputs based on defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as cost, energy efficiency, impact on the grid (quality, stability, safety), battery ageing, noise & the environmental and health impact of the different use cases.

Finally, we are also in charge of the definition of the 3 Business Cases, including impact assessment from information generated from the demonstrators:

• interoperability buses: single charging solution (Barcelona and Osnabruck)
• interoperability buses: charging solutions (Barcelona and Osnabruck)
• interoperability charging solutions: buses and trucks (Barcelona, Osnabruck and Gothenburg)

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Project Consortium will develop the following Key Innovations:

• interoperable high power charging systems with power levels up to 600 kW and high transfer efficiency
• charger-vehicle interoperability and standardization
• smart tools for fleet level optimization
• innovative energy storage systems and charging management strategies

Thanks to those innovations, ASSURED will contribute to reducing noise and air pollution, as well as the total cost of ownership and operational costs.
 
Another element that will be improved is the grid stability to ensure a secure energy supply, essential for future uses when a larger number of vehicles will rely on the charging infrastructure.
