Challenge

Only about 1,2% of Europe’s existing buildings are renovated every year and there is a need to share knowledge, build capacity and capitalize on all possible win-win solutions that may arise from the mutual collaboration of key financial actors, decision-makers and social stakeholders.

In particular, there are key gaps that act as main barriers to develop new cutting-edge solutions for the deep energy renovation of existing buildings, such as long pay-back times of retrofitting interventions, a lack of a standardized set of technical solutions or integrated solutions to comply to new and different building standards requirements and insufficient incentives.

Therefore, ABRACADABRA aims at demonstrating a new renovation strategy based on AdoRES, that are sets of Assistant Building Units, such as aside or façade addictions, rooftop extensions or even an entire new building adopting the existing buildings (the so called assisted buildings).

Adores can be integrated with Renewable Energy Sources and reduce in this way the initial investment for the deep renovation of existing buildings.

To achieve this objective, ABRACADABRA has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 696126.

Approach

In the framework of ABRACADABRA, RINA is in charge of the communication and dissemination of ABRACADABRA results.

One of the most important activity has been the development of an interactive web portal in order to establish an online community and promote the advantages of deep retrofitting solutions, especially the opportunities provided by AdoRE.

Moreover, the interactive web portal aims at establishing (web) networking in order to increase the visibility of the platform thanks to exploiting synergies with other networks having their focuses on energy efficiency in buildings.

In fact, stakeholders’ engagement is fundamental in order to achieve ABRACADABRA’s results.

Conclusion

The result of ABRACADABRA will be the implementation of a punctual densification policy that has been proven capable of fostering the investments in deep renovation of the existing built environment throughout Europe.

In particular, the project will overcome technical, legislative, social and financial barriers in order to develop, test and implement decision-making tools for renovation strategies and policy recommendations.

The main impacts of the project for the EU community are:

  • Support in the development of policies for facilitating the implementation of deep renovation strategies through the application od AdoRE
  • Identification of the key enable conditions to finance deep renovation of buildings
  • Establishment of a long-term financing strategy accelerating the revolution towards nZEBs (nearly zero-enery buildings)
